Happy New Year! Have you made any New Year resolutions? Have you broken them yet? A recent survey says women are more prone to break resolutions first and the average time a resolution is kept before being broken is eight days. Wow, we sure don’t have a lot of "won’t-power," do we? Of course many resolutions are made without much planning on how we are going to meet our goal and many of them are not very realistic. The number one resolution people make is they are going to "get fit" in the coming year or they are going to lose x number of pounds. Fitness centers are filled to the brim in January- there is a waiting time for a treadmill or bike, come February there are machines to spare. In January we eat salads, fruit and turn down all tempting desserts and we would all be on our diets in February if someone had not stuck Valentine’s Day smack dab in the middle of the month. Now there are those few hearty souls who stick to it and achieve their goals and we all wish we could be like them, but for the majority of us it is one step forward and two steps back and we beat ourselves up over every little misstep, every little failure and then we quit because there is just no point, we are never going to lose that last ten pounds, or run a marathon.

What do you REALLY want for Christmas? I bet if you polled 100 people this question it would not be "stuff" that they would be requesting. My guess is the things people really want are not material; they are more emotional and spiritual. What I think we all truly want is joy and happiness, a sense of peace, hope for the coming year and love.

Is it just me or are the ads for politicians nastier than usual? Instead of focusing on what they will do if elected, it seems all they want to do is talk about what miserable low lives their opponents are! My father use to say to me; "Small people talk about other people. Average people talk about things. Great people talk about ideas." I think what this country needs is more great people-what do you think?

"Fear seems to be in the driver's seat these days. We are troubled and anxious. Finances are tumbling, rockets are launching, and seemingly solid institutions are teetering. It's tough to know where to turn, isn't it? But there is an antidote for our fears-trust. If we trust God more, we can fear less. Jesus did not want us to live fearfully. He often reminded us 'Fear not.'"
